So instead of just signing up with 3rd free email services such as hotmail.com or gmail.com and end up with the same domain name part in your email address with everyone else, you want to try something new, that is to have your own domain name and use your own domain name to set up an email address for yourself?
If the answer is yes, you've come to the right solution. Just follow me through the steps listed below.
1. You will need to register a domain name. There are a lot of places to register a domain name but to find the cheapest vendor, you got do a little homework or just listen to my tip at the end of the article.
2. After you have registered the domain name, you will need to set the 3 name servers of your domain to ns1.dreamhost.com, ns2.dreamhost.com, ns3.dreamhost.com.
3. Sign up for a shared hosting account at dreamhost by the coupon I have at the end of this article so you can save $70.
4. After you have become the user of dreamhost, go to domain manager, add your domain registered at step 1 to the system.
5. Go to Google Apps cpanel page and add the domain name you registered at step 1. Follow the steps through to create your apps account with Google.
6. Google Apps will ask you to change some DNS settings for your domain, but you don't have to do that because the reason I chose dreamhost in this is that they automatically do the dirty work for you when you were adding the domain name. Cool, huh?
7. Create a user from Google Apps under your own domain by the Add User link. This is the email you are going to use. Note that there is a limit of 50 accounts per Google Apps free version license.
8. After creation and specifying the user name and password, you can log in into your own email under your own domain at Google.
9. The interface is just like that of Gmail. Very easy and intuitive to use yet you have your very own email under your own domain name!
When you are signing up with the shared hosting, make sure you provide the DreamHost promo code to get $70 discount off the first year which is a rather generous promotional discount. Other than this, you may also find the Cloud servers review useful in finding a great host.
